SOUDERTON, PA — Republicans have managed to flip control of the borough council following last week's municipal races.

Five Republicans on the ballot won election to Souderton Borough Council, effectively taking over a political majority from the Democrats on the political body.

The GOP won seats on Wards 1, 2 and 3 in the race, a move that county Republican officials praised.

"We are exceptionally proud of the dozens of Republican candidates who stepped up to run this cycle," the Montgomery County Republican Committee said in a Facebook post on Monday.

According to the unofficial county election results, those who won election to the Souderton Borough Council were Republicans Matthew Dinenna and Richard Walczak in Ward 1, Republican Tracy W. Burke in Ward 2, and Republicans Courtnee Wampole and Edward Huber in Ward 3.

The results were most recently updated on Sunday, since county election officials still had a small number of mail-in ballots to tally. That number would likely be too small to have any meaningful impact on the Souderton race, however.

For now, it appears as though the Republicans have taken control of the Souderton Borough Council.

The only incumbent in the race was Huber, of Ward 3. The other Republicans will be newcomers to the council.

Current council member Dan Yocum, who is a political independent, was leaving council to run for mayor, and according to the unofficial election results, he won that post. Yocum appeared to run cross-filed as both a Republican and Democrat and he took the race with 1,367 votes, according to the county unofficial election returns.

The Souderton Borough Council race is one of a handful across Montgomery County in which Republicans either succeeded in flipping the political bodies or at least adding GOP held seats.

Election news out of Montgomery County even went national recently, with Republican success being the highlight of an article in the National Review.
