Towamencin's Kofi Osei To Run For PA State Senate

The local township supervisor will challenge Sen. Tracy Pennycuick for a seat that has been held by Republicans since 1959.

TOWAMENCIN TOWNSHIP, PA — Towamencin Township supervisor Kofi Osei announced his candidacy for Pennsylvania State Senate in 2026 this week, as he seeks a Montgomery and Berks County seat that has been held by Republicans since its inception in 1959.

The always red 24th district has been held by State Sen. Tracy Pennycuick since 2023, when she took over for 14-year veteran Bob Mensch.

Osei was first elected to the township board in 2023 and has quickly built a following through hands-on, grassroots campaigning and community work.

"As Supervisor, Kofi has been unapologetic in his values and steadfast in his leadership, whether
making clear that Nazis have no place in the community or advancing policies that strengthen Towamencin’s long-term resilience," his campaign site reads. "His accomplishments include championing long-term capital planning to stabilize taxes, expanding open space protections, and finally passing a long-delayed backyard chicken ordinance that had been stalled for seven years."

While Pennycuick may be slightly favored to hold on to her seat, Democrats have made significant gains in long-held Republican seats across Montgomery, Chester, Delaware, and even Bucks counties over the eight years.

That suburban Philly "blue wave" was tempered in the 2024 election that saw renewed support for President Trump over Kamala Harris, but Democrats won big again at the local level in the 2025 primaries when there was no national Democrat on the ticket. Osei's campaign looks to tap into that same energy as they attempt to wrest control of the state senate away from Republicans for the first time in decades.

The race has been closer in recent years, with Mensch winning his final election in 2018 by about five thousand votes, and Pennycuick winning in 2023 by a tally of 62,893 to Linda Fields' 58,053.

Osei said this week that he believes that the 24th senatorial district race in Pennsylvania will be "one of the most expensive state legislative districts in the country in 2026."

Osei became a cult hero of sorts to Democrats even before he took office, as his Towamencin supervisor election against Republican Rich Marino ended in a dead tie. In an extraordinarily rare and unusual circumstance, Osei later won the race in a random draw used to break the tie.

Pennsylvania's 24th senatorial district covers a significant swath of Montgomery County including Towamencin, Skippack, Perkiomen, Limerick, North Wales, Collegeville, Pottstown, Trappe, and more. It runs into Berks County, where it includes Amity, Boyertown, Earl, Douglass, and several other municipalities.
