Briar Bush Nature Center Offers Events in October

Abington Walks!

  • Exploring Alverthorpe Park

When: Saturday, October 1, 9 a.m.

Abington Parks and Recreation Director Doug Wendell will co-lead a walk through Alverthorpe Park, an extraordinary 80-acre community resource. We'll explore its forest, fields, golf course, ponds, and more, talking about its history and uses, fall ecology, and, yes, those dreaded geese.

Location: Forrest Avenue entrance between Jenkintown and Fox Chase Roads (meet at the control house by the tennis courts)
 
Cost: free (all ages welcome)

Naturally Curious Kids

  • New Program (1st-3rd graders)

When: Tuesday, October 4 and 18, 4-5 p.m.

Kids who play outside stay outside! Games, hands-on activities and some plain-ole poking around encourage young minds to develop a deeper appreciation for nature. Each week features a unique topic led by our engaging environmental educators.  This special time "for kids to be kids" cultivates curiosity for and an understanding of plants, animals and natural processes while empowering kids to feel confident and comfortable in a safe, natural setting.

Cost: $12/session - non-members

Great Escape (day trip)

  • Form and Function

When: Thursday, October 6, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Take a look inside the creative minds of Wharton Esherick, "the Dean of American craftsmen", and Frank Lloyd Wright, "the greatest American architect of all time". Begin the day with a tour of the Wharton Esherick estate and workshop, "an autobiography executed in wood" which features deliberate, unique curved walls and stunning woodwork throughout. After lunch, visit Temple Beth Sholom, the only synagogue ever designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and the last project that he completed before his death. Buy lunch.
