Bryn Athyn to Host 9/11 Picnic, Provide Live Stream of Service Online
Bryn Athyn Cathedral will hold a Sept. 11 picnic at 6.m. for local residents, police and fire companies in the area. There will also be a service at the New Church, which will be posted live on the internet.
In the days after the tragic events the occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, the Bryn Athyn Cathedral held daily serves to help people cope with the catastrophe that changed our country forever.
The historic cathedral right in Lower Moreland’s back yard was the host to hundreds of people who wanted to attend services as everyone learned to deal with terrorists attack their own way.
“When it happened in 2001, the cathedral had services every week,” Pastor Jeremy Simons said. “We had a picnic (in the days following) and it was really well attended. The Upper Moreland Police Department had officers and they all came in uniform.”

The event was so successful that the Bryn Athyn Cathedral has decided to do a second picnic on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. The Bryn Athyn police department and fire company, along with other local police and fire squads, will gather on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.
Community members are being asked to bring picnic items to share.

“We discovered that there are hundreds of celebrations throughout the different local areas,” Simons said. “We’re going to have a picnic where we will light candles in remembrance of the people lost on that day. We’re asking people to bring food items for a kind of pot-luck picnic.”
There will be a few words and a brief ceremony, but overall, this event will be more of a gathering than a prayer service. A more formal service will be held at the New Church, which can also be seen online.
That morning, www.newchurch.org will post a live stream of its 9/11 special worship service, in remembrance of the events of 10 years ago, and how people came together at that time.
Once the service is over, people can also see watch the video at www.newchurch.tv.
