Don't Forget to Submit Artwork for Montco Recycling Program
Teams are currently working together on building sculptures as part of the "Rethinking Plastic" theme. Submissions for the 6-month long event will be taken until Nov. 11

The Montgomery County recycling program is in the middle of its 6-month long recycled art contest at the Abington Art Center.
The event is a Sculpture Challenge where teams of families, friends, students, art clubs etc. will work together to build a sculpture made from found objects and recyclables.

Through the theme ‘Rethinking Plastic,’ residents of Montgomery County will be charged with making artwork from plastic products such as bottles, bags and toys.
“It is my hope that we will be fostering a community that seeks to stop the unnecessary wasting of plastic through the promotion of waste reduction, reuse and recycling,” said Chris Kaasmann, Montgomery County Recycling Coordinator and creator of the contest.

The contest will feature 3 age groups: 12 and under, 13 – 18 and 19 and up. Each age group will be awarded $100 for best overall and $50 for being the runner up. All participants will receive 1 (20oz.) recycled post consumer #2 (HDPE) plastic water bottle. All prizes will be sponsored by businesses in the waste and recycling industry operating in Montgomery County.
Guidelines for art submissions are as follows:
- Entries must be made from plastic. (i.e.: plastic bottles, caps, containers, bags, toys, etc.
- One entry per artist.
- All entries must be original artwork.
- Permitted use of non-recyclable fasteners such as glue or tape.
- Entries must be in good taste as they will be displayed in the public.
- All art mediums accepted.
- Must be willing to donate artwork for educational purposes. You will not get your artwork back.
- Dimensions - Maximum of 3ftx3ftx3ft or 50lbs
- Must deliver art to Montgomery County Recycling Coordinator

The contest, ‘Rethinking Plastic’ will culminate on November 11, 2011 and will be judged shortly thereafter to celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15. Artwork will be used to educate school students in Montgomery County about plastic waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
