UNITED STATES — Area residents are being advised of an emergency alert test that will be taking place across the region, and the country, this afternoon.

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission plan to conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and the Wireless Emergency Alerts beginning at 2:20 p.m. today, Aug. 11, and ending at 2:50 p.m.

Test messages will be sent to televisions, radios and select cellphones that have opted-in to receive such text messages, according to an announcement from FEMA.

FEMA says the test is similar to regular monthly tests typically done by state governments, and that during the tests, radios and televisions nationwide may experience an interruption in programming.

The message for the tests may be delivered in English or Spanish, depending on a device’s language settings.
