Huntingdon Valley Country Club Member Earns Medalist Honors at Tourney

Andrew Mason, 22, fired a 5-under par to finish in first place in a qualifier and now has a spot in the 107th Open Championship in July at HVCC.

Huntingdon Valley Country Club member Andrew Mason turned a tremendous round, firing a 5-under-par 66 on Tuesday at Riverton Country Club in Cinnaminson, N.J. to earn medalist honors and a berth into the 107th Open Championship.

The Open Championship will be right in Mason’s backyard at the HVCC set for July 20. It’s a one-day, 36-hole event featuring 72 players in all, 24 of which qualified from their performance at Riverton.

The final Open Qualifier is scheduled for today at Radley Run CC.

Mason, who is a senior at Temple and only 22-years-old, also finished as a medalist at last year’s Championship Qualifier.

“I’m real happy. I worked pretty hard in the off-season with my coach Brian Quinn of Temple University and BQ Golf Academy. I worked really hard on my putting and flighting shots better,” Mason said in an interview after the tournament. “I can’t wait to play Huntingdon Valley [in the Open]. Today was one of the day’s this summer I targeted to play well because I wanted to give myself an opportunity to play before the home crowd.”

Mason finished at -5 for the round, two strokes better than Benjamin Smith from Little Mill Country Club.

He finished the 18-hole round with seven birdies, nine pars and only two bogies.

This is a vast improvement from last year where Smith finished seventh competing in his first Open Championship. Now the competitor is excited about playing on his “home turf.”

“I think I should have a little bit of an edge,” said Mason, who is the reigning club champion. “I love Huntingdon Valley.”
