Huntingdon Valley Gets Back on Track with Sweep of Southampton

The Huntingdon Valley American Legion team stopped its losing streak with two wins against Southampton in Sunday's doubleheader.

After six straight losses, the Huntingdon Valley American Legion baseball team got back on track by sweeping a doubleheader against Southampton Sunday afternoon.

The opening game was a high-scoring affair that saw a combine 21 runs cross the plate before the 4th inning, but HV was able to hang on for a 16-10 win.

Jess Goldstein, Nick Rittler and Lou Palmer had three hits apiece to pace to offense. Goldstein drove in three runs while Robert Hoffman and Chris Ruhl each had a pair of RBIs in HV’s 17-hit attack.

HV jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 3rd only to see Southampton storm back with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. HV, however, responded with an 8-run 4th inning to put some separation between itself and Southampton.

Paul Buckley picked up the win despite not having the most attractive pitching line. He allowed 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings, allowed eight earned runs and struck out six batters.

Defense and pitching was a bit more prevalent in Game 2, with HV coming out on top 5-4. Both teams scored twice in the first inning and Southampton had a 4-2 lead midway through the game. A 3-run 5th put Huntingdon Valley in front for good and Brian Camp didn’t allow another run from the second inning on in a complete-game effort.

Camp struck out nine batters and scattered six hits to pick up the win.

Offensively, Bobby Leonard, Jake Madnick and Jared Licht led the charge with two hits apiece. Goldstein drove in a pair of runs for a total of 5 RBIs in the two games.

HV now stands at 7-9 on the season, and plays a rescheduled game against Cedarbrook at home tonight.
