Lower Moreland Baseball Set for a Big Week

The Lions will play three games this week, including two at home on Thursday and Friday.

It’s a busy week for the Lower Moreland varsity baseball team and it kicks off today with the first of three league opponents.

Despite a 1-3 start to the season, the Lions have been competitive and have been in every game. Two of their losses have been by a single run and its three combine loses and been by a total of five.

The Lions will go into undefeated Springfield (4-0) today at 3:45, and then wrap up the week with two home games against Christopher Dock and New Devon Prep Thursday and Friday, respectively.

“It’s a week where we can go 3-0 or 0-3,” LM coach Dennis Murphy said. “We have a pretty big week.  Devon is pretty good and has only lost one game.”

If there has been a pleasant surprise to start the season, it’s been the hitting. The Lions were supposed to be led by their pitching and strong arms, but the bats have come alive in the early going.

Senior Rob Hoffman is 6-for-13 while sophomores Jordan Pocrass and Ryan Killion each have a home run on the season.

“We’ve been hitting, which has been a little bit of a surprise,” Murphy said. “We hit two home runs already. We lost a good core of seniors but we replaced them with five very good sophomores.”

Tyler Hun makes up the trio along with Pocrass and Killion as regulars in the starting lineup.

As far as the pitching goes, Ross Goodman and Mark Dougherty have done a good job of keeping their team in games thus far.

“Going with our pitching depth I expect us to stay competitive,” Murphy said. “We could be 4-0. We were tied 3-3 halfway through the game (against Holy Ghost) and they are usually a powerhouse. We beat Dock and they were state champs three years ago.”

It’s very early in the season and there’s still a lot that will happen before the Bicentennial League is decided. Come out this week and support the team. Both home games start at 3:45 pm. Thursday and Friday.
