PECO Scams Surge In Lower Southampton Township

The energy company warns residents of a recent uptick in scam calls, with scammers asking for peoples' bank information over the phone.

LOWER SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA — PECO has issued a warning to residents of Lower Southampton Township about a recent uptick in scam calls, with scammers calling PECO customers and asking for their bank information.

"We have seen an increase in reports of payment scams in [the] area," the energy company said. "These scammers are contacting PECO customers and falsely claiming their electric or gas service will be disconnected unless payment is made immediately."

This method of scamming, referred to as "spoofing", manipulates the Caller ID phone number displayed on customers' phones to make it look as if PECO is calling them.

"PECO will never demand immediate payment, nor will we ever require one specific form of payment, such as a prepaid card or bitcoin," the company said.

A list of approves payments methods is displayed on PECO's website; employees of the company will never ask for a payment to be made immediately over the phone.
