Violinist Benjamin Beilman performs at Duffy Arts Center

Acclaimed young violinist Benjamin Beilman performs in the Duffy Arts Center on May 15

Fresh off winning first prize at the 2010 Young Concert Artists competition, internationally renowned violinist Benjamin Beilman brings his talents to the Duffy Arts Center at Malvern Preparatory School on Sunday, May 15, at 2:30 p.m. The performance is presented by Tri-County Concerts as part of the Emerging Artists Series.

Hailed as “a poised and monstrously talented 20-year-old violinist” by Philadelphia Inquirer music critic Peter Dobrin, Beilman studies with Ida Kavafian at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he pursues a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance.

The concert will include Bach’s Sonata for Violin and Keyboard in E major and Sonata for Violin Solo in g minor; Strauss’ Sonata for Violin and Piano in E flat major; and works by Rogerson, Tower, and Hubay. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for seniors. Students and children may attend the concert free of charge, thanks to support from the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund. Ben Beilman is rapidly gaining attention for his “impeccable” playing and “eloquence and flair” (MusicalAmerica.com). He made his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in June 2009, a performance The Philadelphia Inquirer praised for its “emotional weight” and “distinctive, full-bodied sound.” He has also appeared as soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Symphony, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony, L’Orchestre Metropolitain de Montréal, and the RAI National Symphony in Turin, Italy, among others. Highlights of the 2010-2011season include performances with the New Mexico and Longmont symphony orchestras, as well as recitals and chamber performances for the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society, Linton Chamber Music Series, and Astral Artists.

A passionate chamber musician, Beilman has been a featured artist at the Marlboro Music Festival since the age of 17, and tours with “Musicians from Marlboro” in the spring of 2011. He has collaborated with members of the Guarneri, Emerson, and Orion string quartets, as well as with such eminent artists as Mitsuko Uchida, Richard Goode, Gary Graffman, Pamela Frank, Peter Wiley, Roberto Díaz, and Ida Kavafian.

In addition to winning first prize in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, he was also awarded the Buffalo Chamber Music Society Prize, the Candlelight Concert Society Prize, and the Friends of Music Concerts Prize. He was named the First Prize winner of the 2010 Montréal International Musical Competition, and was the First Prize winner of both the 2009 Schmidbauer Competition and the 2009 Corpus Christi International Competition, where he was also awarded the special Bach prize.
