Code Orange and Heat Advisories Issued for Tuesday

High heat and humidity could make breathing tougher for some people.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission has issued a code orange alert for Delaware County and much of the area surrounding Philadelphia and its suburbs.

The alert means that air pollution could become unhealthy for people in sensitive groups including young children, the elderly and people with asthma, heart disease and other lung diseases.

In addition to the code orange alert, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory that will be in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for Delaware County and a wide section of the region, including most of the southeastern region of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.

The weather service reports that the heat index (what the combination of heat and humidity actually feel like) could top out around 105 degrees. The advisory suggests taking frequent breaks if you work outside, drinking plenty of liquids and checking on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly.

If you are a Newtown resident, police are currently. Call the police department if you would like to add your name or a neighbor's name to the list.
