Man Hits Lights, Admits to 2 Martinis, Police Say

NEWTOWN SQUARE–On Jan. 24 at approximately 5:50 p.m., Newtown police responded to the area of West Chester Pike/Rt. 3 and Campus Boulevard for a report of a possible medical emergency.

According to the report, a man was reported to be slumped over the wheel of a vehicle. Upon arrival, police observed the vehicle facing southbound in the northbound exit of West Chester Pike. In addition, police immediately noticed the vehicle had front-end damage and appeared the vehicle struck the curb as well as the lights that illuminate the Newtown Square Corporate Campus sign.

Police were able to speak with the driver of the vehicle, who was sitting in the driver’s seat. No passengers were reported in the vehicle. The man was identified as a 41-year-old man from Malvern.

When police asked the man what happened, the man indicated that he was attempting to make a right turn onto Campus Boulevard from West Chester Pike. While speaking with the man, police detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man. Police observed the man’s eyes were glassy and appeared to be intoxicated and his speech was slurred while speaking.

When police asked the man how much he had to drink, the man responded, “I had two martinis, but that was hours ago,” according to the report. The man told police he had been drinking “up the street at La Locanda” in Edgmont, according to the report.

When police asked the man to step out from the vehicle to perform sobriety tests, police observed the man was unsteady on his feet and his pants' zipper was down. Police believe that the man may have urinated in his pants, according to the report.

The man failed all three field sobriety tests and a portable breathalyzer test was administered on the man, police say. A blood alcohol content level of 0.152 percent was recorded. The man was arrested and charged with DUI and careless driving.
