Chasing Dreams Side by Side: A Mother and Son’s Journey at DCIU

In honor of Mother's Day, DCIU highlights Bernice, a nursing student and mom pursuing her dream alongside her son, Towlee.

When Bernice walks into class, she is not just pursuing a lifelong goal—she is sharing the experience with her son. This Mother’s Day, the Practical Nursing Program celebrates Bernice for her determination, compassion and the inspiring path she is paving for her family.

A mother of three, Bernice was encouraged by her oldest daughter, Tu’Brina, a 2023 graduate of DCTS’s Medical Careers program, to pursue her long-standing dream of becoming a nurse. After years of caring for her siblings and parents during difficult times, Bernice knew she was meant to help others through nursing.

“Giving care brought me a sense of joy and contentment. I want to make a difference during difficult times, and this program has helped me build the confidence to do that,” she said.

Her time in the program has been full of growth, hands-on experiences and meaningful connections. She especially values the clinical rotations, patient interactions and the support from instructors and classmates. After graduation, Bernice plans to pass the NCLEX, begin working in a hospital or long-term care facility, and eventually continue her education to become a registered nurse. She also hopes to give back to her community through volunteer work.

Bernice’s son, Towlee, is currently a senior in the DCTS high school program. He describes his typical day as focused and rewarding, filled with opportunities to gain certifications in computer networking and digital forensics. Watching his mother work toward her goals has left a lasting impression.

“If anyone deserves the title of being a nurse, it’s her. She always talked about it when I was younger, and now I get to see it happening,” he said.

He will attend Temple University this fall to study computer science and hopes to find an internship this summer to get a head start on his career.

Bernice is the first in her family to pursue a career in nursing. As she moves forward, she hopes to inspire others to follow their dreams, no matter where they start.
