The crash happened at about 9 a.m. Monday on Route 1 north at Ridley Creek Road in Upper Providence Township, according to officials.

Upper Providence Township Police said a tanker truck crashed and overturned on the road, causing the driver to become entrapped while the truck leaked diesel fuel from its own tank, as well as the saddle tanks.

Firefighters and HAZMAT units contained the leak, but officials said "a significant amount of product" spilled onto the highway.

Aqua Pennsylvania said customers’ drinking water was not impacted by the spill.

Local access will be maintained during the Ridley Creek Road closure.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work area because backups and delays will occur.
