Network Deal Forces Wheeler, Matthews from Phillies Booth

Whatever the result of the team's offseason on-field acquisitions, Phillies fans will have two new faces to look at when the MLB club returns to broadcast television.

According to an announcement on the team website, Chris Wheeler and Gary "Sarge" Matthews have been relieved of their broadcast duties, while Tom McCarthy and Gregg Murphy will return.

For those who listen to the games on the radio, the duo of Larry Andersen and Scott Franzke will remain intact.

Phillies management noted that Wheeler was the longest-tenured member of its broadcasting team, having outlived former partners Richie Ashburn and Harry Kalas after 37 years on the job. 

Both Wheeler and Matthews will remain with the organization in different capacities, the team confirmed.

Wheeler has been with the team since 1971, working in its public relations department for six years before heading to the broadcast booth. 

Matthews, played for the team for two years, during which he landed the 1983 NLCS MVP award.
