Around the state and around the country, people on Thursday shared memories of where they were that sunny September day 13 years ago.

Gov. Tom Corbett on Thursday morning visited the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County. “This place where the passengers and crew rose up against their oppressors is now their home among a grateful state and an awe-struck nation,” Corbett said. “Because of their efforts, the United States Capitol remains standing, a symbol of our freedom preserved by the greatness of forty people who proved that in America, there are no ordinary people.”

Flight 93 crashed at 10:03 a.m. Sept. 11, 2001, in an empty field in Somerset County. It was the only one of the four hijacked airplanes not to reach its intended target.

“Thirteen years ago on this date, this site became the first battlefield in the War on Terror,” Corbett said. “Today, it is a monument, a place where courage and honor pushed aside fear and the universal impulse for freedom and dignity spoke louder than the clamor of tyrants.”
