Lehigh Valley Gets $299K for High-Tech Job Training
Gov. Tom Corbett comes to Lehigh Career & Technical Institute with money to train students for high-tech manufacturing jobs.
The Lehigh Valley is getting state money to train students in high-tech manufacturing jobs.
Gov. Tom Corbett announced a $298,500 grant Thursday at the Lehgh Career & Technical Institute in Schnecksville.
The money will fund Skill Up, a collaboration of LCTI, the Manufacturers Resource Center, the DaVinci Science Center and the Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board to develop students with the advanced skills and education necessary to support the manufacturing sector.

Sandy Himes, executive director of LCTI, said manufacturing jobs in the Lehigh Valley are going unfilled because there are not enough trained workers with the right skills to fill those positions.
"We need to start looking at education for the 21st century," Corbett said, adding that the type of education needed involves math and computer skills.

The education students are receiving at LCTI and other technical schools "is not the vo-tech of 1967," Corbett emphasized.
