Police: Officer Injured After Drunk, Suicidal Man Became Combative

Nazareth officer Stephen Schleig was sent to Easton Hospital and is collecting workers' compensation.

A Nazareth man is in Northampton County Prison after he allegedly became combative and sent a borough police officer to Easton Hospital last week, police say.

According to a criminal complaint:

On June 25 around 12:08 a.m., Officer Stephen Schleig responded to the 100 block of N. Green Street for reports of an intoxicated man who was attempting to commit suicide.

Schleig and Melissa Sutliff, an EMT with Nazareth Ambulance, “attempted to perform an intervention,” but Neil Patrick Siegfried, 31, became combative.

Siegfried struck the officer with his legs and elbows, and then allegedly spit on Sutliff.

Siegfried, who resides on the 100 block of N. Green Street, told Schleig, Sutliff and Officer Nick Timar that he would kill them by slitting their throats.

Siegfried was charged with three counts each of aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. He was also charged with resisting arrest.

Siegfried was sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Schleig sustained a shoulder injury and is collecting workers’ compensation. He is one of the borough's three full-time officers.
