Bicentennial Celebration Continues at Gotwals Today
"Day of the Child/Day of the Book," a celebration of literacy and culture, brings special guests to Gotwals Elementary.

Today is El dia de los niños/El dia de los libros or “Day of the Child/Day of the Book,” and students and their families at will be celebrating with live Latin jazz, sports, face painting, and readings from bilingual children’s author, Lindsay Barrett George.
Expected guests for today's celebration include Senator Daylin Leach, Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro, Leslie S. Richards, and Bruce L. Castor, Jr., 6ABC and Telemundo anchor Tamala Edwards, and the Philly Phanatic. Beatriz Nunez, of the Norristown Hispanic Business Association, and members of the Bicentennial Committee will be on hand to present poetry awards to student teams.
“We are committed to children’s literacy in Montgomery County, and the Day of the Child promotes reading in a fun and accessible way for both kids and their families” said Josh Shapiro, chair of the Montgomery County Commissioners. Vice Chair Richards added that “the multi-cultural aspect of Day of the Child fits into the larger celebration of Norristown’s 200th anniversary and highlights the rich diversity of our county seat.”

The celebration kicks off at 9:30 a.m. The event, which emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds, is part of the Norristown Bicentennial.
