MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Residents looking to rid themselves of expired or unwanted medication will be able to participate in a drug take back event later this month across Montgomery County.

The program, which is jointly run by the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and the Police Chiefs Association of Montgomery County, will give people the chance to safely discard any unused medications, either prescription or over the counter.

The drug take back event will take place on Oct. 29 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 31 different sites across the county.

Most locations will be local police departments, but two of the sites will be grocery stores.

"In the 12 years since we began this Drug Take Back program in an effort to make homes safer, we have collected and safely destroyed 103,000 pounds of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines," Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said in a statement. "That is an astounding amount of drugs that will not be leeching into landfills or polluting our waterways."

Those looking to discard their medications can either place the items into small plastic bags or leave them in their original pill containers.

The types of medications that will be accepted during the program are pills, capsules, tablets, inhalers, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, pet medication and vaping products.

No needles, liquid medicine, intravenous items or injectable solutions will be accepted.

The various sites that will be accepting medications will be staffed by police officers.
