Elmwood Park Zoo Receives Accreditation

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a nonprofit organization that accredits zoos and aquariums across the globe, recently visited the Elmwood Park Zoo to bestow its blessing on Norristown's shining jewel.

On Thursday, Nov. 9, Kris Vehrs, Executive Director of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), recently visited the to present the Norristown institution with it's latest five-year accreditation.

According to the AZA, accredited zoos and aquariums undergo a thorough review including a detailed accreditation application as well as a multi-day on-site inspection by a team of experts from around the country.

Vehrs praised Elmwood's leadership – in the form of Zoo Director Bill Konstant and a very active board – and especially the dedicated staff.

Of the almost 2800 zoos and aquariums in the U.S., only 224 receive accreditation from the AZA.
