Authorities connected Patience to the scene using surveillance footage and an extensive investigation into cell phone tower data and pings to both Patience's and Rodriguez's phone, according to court documents. The two called each other several times in the hours before the shooting, police said.

Patience successfully appealed the case and had it dismissed, with lawyers arguing that the prosecution's evidence was not sufficient to tie the suspected murder weapon to an image of a weapon seen later in a Snapchat post, court documents show.

However, the prosecution later appealed, arguing that the dismissal had not considered all of the evidence. Patience was released on bail but then never appeared for a scheduled status hearing.
