MLK Day Events and Projects

Area residents are honoring the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. with events and service projects in Norristown today.

Residents from all over the area will be attending events and working on service projects in Norristown in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Here are just a few of the highlights:

is hosting an at the PAL Community Center on Harding Boulevard. Volunteers will be painting, cleaning out storing, organizing, gardening and more. 

More than 250 volunteers participated last year at GNPAL, and with the more volunteers anticipated for this year the organization is planning to spread out and send volunteers to other projects all over Norristown.

“This year GNPAL’s intent is to make this a Norristown-wide day of service," said PAL Program Director Ken Fennel, "not just at PAL."

The is inviting kids ages 5 to 12 to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., Day with "." Stop by the

is hosting a special Martin Luther King Day panel at 11 a.m. today. Panelists will discuss the legacy of the civil rights leader. Guests will be treated to soul food and all ages are welcome. The group was asking folks to RSVP by Jan. 11, but there still may be a few spots left. Call 610-275-4571 right away if you're interested in attending.

While will be closed for business today, Norristown residents are invited to join local luminaries and elected officials past and present there at 6 p.m. for a special celebration of the 25th anniversary of the MLK monument at Simmons Park. They'll honoring some of the original committee members responsible for getting the monument constructed – Carrie Darden, Sal Gambone, James Randolph and Judge Francis Lawrence – among others.
