Norristown Mural Project Holding Community Painting Day on Saturday, June 16

The Norristown Arts Hill has announced the rescheduled date for the Norristown Mural Project's Community Painting Day on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to noon on the third floor of the  at 208 Dekalb Street. Bothe adults and children are welcome to attend to help with the painting.

The event is intended to give residents an opportunity to have a hand in creating the mural designed by Philadelphia artist Matthew Bush that will eventually be installed on the southern wall of the building at 201 DeKalb Street (at the corner of Lafayette and DeKalb streets.) The mural is meant to act as a welcome gateway to Norristown for folks coming from the DeKalb Street Bridge.

"A mural, more than other art forms, requires that the artist remove him or herself, and act as a vehicle," Bush told Patch in an email interview months ago. "The work will belong to the community, and if it is to be successful, it must derive of that community as well...  The ideas for the design were the products of a  and the resulting design was , with no dissenting votes."

The mural is being funded by a state grant secured by state Sen. Daylin Leach's office. Several public meetings have been held over the last few months to hear input from residents and stake holders on the content of the mural.

Pre-registration is recommended as available supplies and space will only accomodate 40 to 50 people – first come, first served. All painters under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. To regiser, send an email to info@norristownartshill.org  or call 484-961-0884.
