Update: Garment Factory Fire Still Under Investigation

Companies from all over Montgomery County and as far away as Chester County responded to the 2nd alarm fire at the foot of the DeKalb Street Bridge this morning.

The Norristown Fire Department responded to a call of smoke pouring from the lower floors of the Camber Sprortswear garment factory at 2 DeKalb Street in Norristown at the foot of the DeKalb Street Bridge at 9:24am this morning.

Due to the size of the building and it's primarily wood construction, firefighters sounded the 2nd alarm bringing almost a dozen additional Montgomery County and even Chester County fire companies to the scene. Crews from Hancock, East Norriton, Plymouth, Whitpain, Barren Hill, Lower Providence and Plymouth Ambulance were among the responders.

According to Norristown Fire Chief Thomas O'Donnell, the fire started in the basement of the building and rose to the first floor where it was contained. The additional top three floors of the structure suffered significant smoke damage. All of the employees of the factory were safely evacuated and no one was injured in the blaze.

A building inspector from Norristown Code Enforcement was on the scene, but had not entered the structure to inspect it as of this posting.

Barbadoes, Cherry DeKalb and Green streets south of Main Street were closed, as was Lafayette Street, so firefighters could access and run hoses from larger water mains in those areas. Roads were reopened around noon as firefighters secured the scene.
