WEATHER ALERT: Ice Leading to 'Very Hazardous Driving Conditions'

Multiple area school district have called for two-hour delays Monday morning as the region is coated in ice.

Be careful: It’s extremely slippery out there.

The region is being coated in ice, the National Weather Service warned Sunday night, adding that we should “expect slippery traveling and walking conditions, especially on untreated surfaces. ... Prepare for travel delays due to very hazardous driving conditions.”

Up to two-tenths of an inch of ice is expected overnight.

Additionally, “isolated power outages are possible,” the NWS said.

Several hundred people in the five-county region were without power Sunday night, PECO said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has reduced the speed limit to 45mph on the following roadways:

  • Interstates 76, 95, 476, 676;
  • U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422; and
  • State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309.

“Although PennDOT crews are treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow,” the transit agency said in a statement. “PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.”

A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the region.

Here’s the hour-by-hour forecast, according to the National Weather Service:

  • Sunday night: Freezing rain and sleet before midnight, then a slight chance of freezing rain between midnight and 3 a.m. Low around 27. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. Total nighttime ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.2 of an inch possible. Total nighttime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Monday: Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 36. Northwest wind 14 to 17 mph.
  • Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 16. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
  • Tuesday: A slight chance of snow before 2 p.m., then snow and sleet likely. Cloudy, with a high near 34. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Tuesday night: Rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 10 p.m., then rain or freezing rain between 10 and 11 p.m., then rain after 11 p.m. Low around 30. Southwest wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
