Whitehall Road Closed for Bridge Repair Starting Monday

Whitehall Road will be closed and detoured for six months while crews repair the bridge over Stony Creek.

According to a release issued by PennDOT, Whitehall Road between Sandra Lane and Stonybrook Drive in East Norriton will be closed and detoured for six months starting Monday, Feb. 20  for the rehabilitation of the bridge over Stony Creek.

Traffic will be detoured over Main Street, North Park Avenue and West Germantown Pike. Local access will be maintained on Whitehall Road up to the construction area. Residents should allow for extra time when traveling through the area.

Under this project, PennDOT will repair the stone arch and side walls and resurface the bridge deck. Work is expected to be completed in late August 2012.

The two-span, pipe arch bridge was built in 1980.The structure is 28 feet wide and 12 feet long and carries 5,271 vehicles a day.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa is the general contractor on the $7,394,127 project financed with state funds.

This PennDOT bridge improvement contract also includes the rehabilitation of seven additional stone arch bridges with various construction dates through 2013:

  • Ridge Avenue over Wissahickon Creek, Philadelphia;
  • Newportville Road over Neshaminy Creek, Bristol Township, Bucks County;
  • Lewis Mill Road over Brandywine Creek, West Nantmeal Township, Chester County;
  • Main Street over the Schuylkill River, Royersford Borough, Montgomery County/ Spring City Borough, Chester County (Completed);
  • Edges Mill Road over Branch Beaver Creek, Caln Township, Chester County (Completed);
  • Goshen Road over Darby Creek, Radnor Township, Delaware County (Completed);and
  • Limeklin Pike over Rock Creek, Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County (Completed).
