Traffic Update for Bridge Repair Project on PA 191 in Northampton County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a change in the traffic control schedule for a project beginning Monday, April 9 to replace the superstructures on two structurally deficient bridges located on PA 191 in Bethlehem and Lower Nazareth townships, Northampton County.

The project consists of replacing the superstructures (decks and beams) on two PA 191 bridges over Monocacy Creek - one is approximately one-half mile north of US 22 in Bethlehem Township, and the other is approximately a quarter-mile farther north in Lower Nazareth Township.

The project also includes guiderail work, line painting, milling and paving PA 191 between the two bridges, and other miscellaneous construction. This work is designed to make these 54-year-old bridges last another 50 or more years.

Previously the contractor had planned to restrict lanes next week only during daytime hours. Now on Monday and Tuesday nights (April 9 & 10), motorists can expect lane restrictions with flagging between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. (no daytime restrictions). Then motorists can expect weekday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) lane restrictions with flagging on PA 191 for the rest of next week as workers perform shoulder work to accommodate lane shifts.

When the bridges are under construction, PA 191 will remain open to traffic with one 11-foot travel lane in each direction.

The PA 191 bridge over Monocacy Creek in Bethlehem Township is a 164-foot-long, 41-foot-wide concrete box beam bridge that was constructed in 1958. With the new superstructure, this bridge will be 164 feet long and 46 feet wide.

The PA 191 Bridge over Monocacy Creek in Lower Nazareth Township is a 106-foot-long, 41-foot-wide concrete box beam bridge that was constructed in 1958. With the new superstructure, this bridge will be 106 feet long and 46 feet wide.

This section of PA 191 has an average daily traffic volume of 15,507 vehicles.

The general contractor on the $3,194,114 project is Road-Con Inc. of West Chester, Pa.

The project is expected to be complete in November. All schedules are weather dependent.
