Here are the top three stories in Philadelphia today:
- CHOP and Habitat for Humanity aim to repair West Philly homes in order to improve health outcomes for children. With a $1M investment from Bank of America, CHOP will be serving over 100 homes where one-third of children live in poverty for its Block Builds program, which is open to families who aren't CHOP patients. CHOP currently removes mold and dust as part of its asthma prevention program. (The Philadelphia Tribune)
- Philadelphia resident Roger Tomes has been charged with luring a child for sexual and illegal activities to his boat in Egg Harbor Township. 57-year-old Tomes believed he was messaging a 15-year-old girl. However, Tomes was actually corresponding with two YouTubers who run a channel dedicated to catching child predators. If convicted, Tomes could face ten years in prison and a penalty of $150,000. (FOX 29 Philadelphia)
- A Philadelphia neighborhood worries a sinkhole will swallow their cars on Keim Street. Residents in the area reported that a city vehicle was almost consumed by the blacktop on Monday morning, leaving a crater in its wake. Walter Stinette, who lives on Keim Street, says the infrastructure there has worsened for over a year. The condition of the street restricts service like mail delivery and trash removal. (WPVI-TV)
Today in Philadelphia:
- Summer Meals Program (Breakfast) At Yeadon Public Library (10:00 AM)
- Jellyfish Lanterns (Grades Six - 12) At Municipal Branch (2:00 PM)
- HIIT At Drexel Square (6:00 PM)
- The Taming! Performance At Clark Park (7:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- Klondike has chosen to discontinue the beloved Choco Taco, which was actually invented in Philadelphia in 1983. An ice cream trucker driver inspired by the hard shell tacos at Chi-Chi's restaurant created the chocolatey treat for Jack & Jill without any idea how far that little taco would go. (Billy Penn)
- For International Beer Day, Square 1682 is partnering with Frankford's My Local Brew Works to offer free samples. Attendees will be able to sample Belgian-Style Farmhouse Ale as well as Vienna-style lager. (Wooder Ice)
- The City of Philadelphia's Office of Immigrant Affairs has welcomed Judi Rhee Alloway, a new Director of Multicultural Affairs. In her new role, Alloway hopes to connect directly with diverse immigrant communities around the city and encourage a welcoming atmosphere for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.
