  1. The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra is launching a jazz ensemble. The jazz orchestra will consist of 17 to 24 players from the tri-state area. On Sep. 10 and 11, students ages 15 to 21 can audition for the jazz orchestra. Rehearsals would start later in September for spring concerts. (The Philadelphia Tribune)
  2. Two cyclists โ€” a man and his girlfriend โ€” are suffering from injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Northeast Philadelphia. Philadelphia police say the accident occurred around 12:48 a.m. Monday on Bustleton Avenue. The bike was split in two and the crash sent the man flying off the bike, throwing him several feet. Police say the man is in extremely critical condition at Frankford Torresdale Hospital. (Patch)
  3. The demolition of a shuttered 19th-century church in Philadelphia is scheduled to begin after a long battle to save it. The 140-year-old St. Laurentius Church in Fishtown has been surrounded by scaffolding, fencing, and barricades. Neighbors gathered for a final look and to take pictures. Michael Johnson of HC Site Construction told WTXF-TV that 150-foot spires will be dismantled by hand to prevent unintentional demolition from equipment vibrations. (witf.org)
