Here are the top three stories in Philadelphia today:
- Philadelphia has received pushback for its commission of a white artist to create a statue of Harriet Tubman. The city offered Wesley Wofford $500,000 to commission the statue after his traveling Harriets Tubman sculpture received such positive feedback. Many people, especially Black artists, expressed dissent based on the artist's race as well as the fact that he was commissioned through a private offer instead of open competition. (Artforum)
- Gas prices across the Philadelphia area have slightly decreased, on par with the national average. Unfortunately, experts estimate that prices will jump again as the summer progresses, especially during July. (CBS Philly)
- As attacks on Philly parking officers increase, the Philadelphia Parking Authority institutes de-escalation training. The training will be executed in partnership with the Philadelphia Police Department. Along with de-escalation tactics, PPA employees are encouraged to be "street smart" and attentive to minimize their vulnerability. (The Philadelphia Tribune)
