Jefferson Health Lays Off 100s Of Workers

A 1 percent reduction in Jefferson Health's workforce may seem small, but that translated to hundreds of workers out of jobs.

PHILADELPHIA — One of the Philadelphia's largest healthcare systems has reduced its workforce via layoffs.

Jefferson Health cut 1 percent of its workforce Wednesday, officials said.

While that percentage may seem small, more than 600 workers have been impacted, NBC10 reports.

The healthcare system's move comes amid financial pressures in the healthcare industry and after rapid growth 10 year ago, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"Like many organizations in health care and higher education, we are facing significant financial headwinds," Joseph G. Cacchione, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Jefferson, said. "To sustain our mission and continue serving our communities, we must take thoughtful, strategic actions to align our operations for the future. While these decisions are never easy, they are necessary to ensure Jefferson remains strong and able to invest in expanding access to care, advancing innovation, and supporting those who rely on us most."
