  1. Philadelphia Works has received a $22.7M federal grant to help 3,000 people into reliable jobs over the next three years. PhilaWorks already offers training and professional development resources to Philadelphians, but their newly funded plan will target healthcare and life sciences, energy, and infrastructure. PhilaWorks was one of 32 organizations across the country given resources through the Good Jobs Challenge. (Technical.ly)
  2. The city has received $25 million in federal funding to improve high-crash corridors. The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) Grant is funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The current plan focuses on seven high-crash corridors in the city, including Westminster Avenue from 40th Street to 52nd Street, Springfield Avenue from 51st Street to 57th Street, and North 57th Street from Upland Way to Wynnefield Avenue. In 2020, over 150 people died due to traffic crashes across the entire city. (westphillylocal.com)
  3. The Philadelphia health department has launched a new lab to sequence and track rapidly developing COVID variants. The U.S. has lagged behind other countries, like the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and Vietnam, in genome sequencing for virus samples. Around 2.5 percent of cases in Pennsylvania are sequenced, while around 3.3 percent of cases in New Jersey and 5.6 percent of cases in Delaware are sequenced. The new lab would ensure more resources, time, and funding for sequencing in the state. (witf.org)
