Philly Cop Hurt, Man Dead After Tuesday Traffic Stop Leads To Shooting

A Philadelphia Police officer was shot twice and the person who fired at him is dead after a Tuesday night incident in the city.

PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia Police officer is doing well after being shot following a traffic stop in Philadelphia Tuesday night, and the accused gunman is dead, according to authorities.

Police said the situation began at about 8:56 p.m. on the 2200 block of Lehigh Avenue when officers tried to stop a vehicle.

That vehicle fled but eventually crashed at 23rd Street and Indiana Avenue, police said.

A man, later identified as 29-year-old Brandon Williams, got out of the vehicle and fired at the officers, striking their vehicle's windshield, and one of the officers.

Police said the officer was struck in his hand and body, but a bulletproof vest prevented further injury, or worse.

Williams kept fleeing, and at 23rd and Cambria streets he fired at another police unit, striking their vehicle's hood, police said.

The man who fired at police was later found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 2900 block of North 23rd Street, according to police.

The injured officer, 38, was taken to Temple University Hospital and has since been released. Police said he was shot once to the right hand, and once to the right chest area. Authorities credited a bulletproof vest with preventing further injury to the office.

No officers fired their weapons during the incident, and part of the incident were captured on body cameras and dashboard cameras.

The incident remains under investigation with the Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit.
