- The Philadelphia Parking Authority has retracted its request for over $10 million of repayments from the School District of Philadelphia. The Parking Authority reportedly splits the money it makes from on-street parking between the city and the school district annually. Authority officials claimed that in 2020, the parking authority paid an "overpayment" of $10.8 million to the school district. "From the beginning, I made it clear that the Parking Authority was never going to take a single dollar back from our schools," at-large City Council member Helen Gym said. "Today's concession by the PPA, a $10.8 million reversal, proves they egregiously overstepped and, once again, underestimated the power of our school communities." (Patch)
- Illegal dumping is an upcoming issue for the Philadelphia City Council after increased reports of the act since the beginning of the pandemic, sometimes contaminating soil and groundwater. On Thursday, Councilmember Cherelle Parker introduced an ordinance that would impose heavier penalties for illegal dumping violations. Currently, the city can impose a fine of up to $2,000 for illegal dumping without a vehicle or up to $5,000 with a vehicle. The new legislation would treat each large piece of debris as its own violation and impose separate fines rather than a single one. (PhillyVoice.com)
- A woman was shot and killed early Sunday morning after a party in Northeast Philadelphia near Rising Sun and Oxford avenues. Police report that the 29-year-old victim was on Rising Sun Avenue near Cottman Avenue when two females pulled up in a car and shot the woman right in front of a police officer, which made for a quick arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 215-686-TIPS. (WPVI-TV)
