A large sunflower garden in Northeast Philadelphia is now open to the public.

Once a vacant lot on Megargee Street in the Holmesburg neighborhood, the space has been transformed into a green sanctuary thanks to the work of Heroic Gardens โ€” a nonprofit that introduces veterans to horticulture as a form of mental health support.

For U.S. Army veteran Mike Peterman, the garden represents more than just a physical change โ€“ it's a lesson in patience. Peterman was one of several veterans among a larger group of volunteers who spent months volunteering on the project.
