Will New Orleans Grease The Polls For Super Bowl?

A spokesperson for New Orleans Police told Patch damaging poles in the historic French Quarter could be costly, legally and financially.

PHILADELPHIA — The likelihood of Philadelphia greasing light and utility poles in anticipation of post Eagles Super Bowl LIX victory revelry is quite high.

But what about in New Orleans, where the big game is being played?

It's unclear if New Orleans authorities are planning to put preventative measures in place for the game.

However, a spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department told Patch that damaging poles in the iconic French Quarter could have serious consequences.

He said climbing light poles, as well as poles supporting balconies in the quarter, is a form of trespassing and could result in charges being filed. Additionally, anyone who damages a pole could be held financially liable for repairs.

The decision to grease the balcony support poles is made by the property owners, the spokesman said.

But pole greasing isn't totally unheard of in New Orleans.

The Royal Sonesta New Orleans hotel holds an annual pole greasing event.

"The Greasing of the Poles is considered by many to be the French Quarter’s official kickoff to Mardi Gras weekend," according to NewOrleans.com. "The Royal Sonesta New Orleans originated the ritual of greasing the building’s support poles as a practical means to deter overzealous revelers from shimmying up to the coveted balcony space. Over half a century later, the practice has evolved into a star-studded and music-filled event, even spawning its own Switzerland-based international fan club."

That event takes place Feb. 28.

So it's unclear if the city will break out grease ahead of the annual event in an effort to keep Eagles fans off their poles.
