Woman Shot After Turning Gun On Officers: Philly Police

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Police shot a woman who was initially threatening her own life but turned her firearm toward officers early Sunday morning, according to authorities.

The incident happened at about 4:11 a.m. Sunday on the 900 block of Erie Avenue when police were called to the area for a report of a person with a gun.

There, they found a 35-year-old Hispanic woman, later identified as Christina Miranda, holding a firearm to the right side of her head, police said.

Officers told Miranda to drop the weapon, but she did not, police said.

One officer used a Taser, which struck Miranda but had no effect, police said.

She then ran across Erie Avenue, and police said that's when she pointed the gun at the officers.

Two officers fired at Miranda, striking her multiple times.

She fell to the ground and dropped her firearm, then the officers took her to Temple University Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Miranda is charged with aggravated assault on police and firearm violations, police said.

Investigators found a .22 caliber Kel-Tec handgun with an obliterated serial number, loaded with one round in the chamber and nineteen rounds in the magazine, at the scene, police said.

No officers or other civilians were hurt in the incident, and the officers had body-worn cameras activated during the encounter.

The discharging officers have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. One is a 36-year-old, 3-year veteran of the force, and the other is a 25-year-old 2-year veteran of the force. Both are assigned to the 25th District.
