PHOENIXVILLE, PA - After a two-year hiatus, the Phoenixville Area High School invites the community to a cookout and football game honoring first responders.

The cookout is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the Phoenixville Area High School, 1200 Gay St. The barbecue is free of charge.

The tradition began in 2016, but was canceled the last two years due to the coronavirus pandemic. The district consists of the borough Phoenixville, and East Pikeland and Schuylkill townships.

This year's event also includes an opportunity to give back to the community by donating items to fill two buses for those in need.

Phoenixville Area Community Services, a nonprofit organization, is asking for donations to fill two buses with non-perishable items and food.

The items include boxed foods, cleaning products, toiletries, baby items. The food list includes cake mixes, snacks, juice, peanut butter, seasonings and canned goods.

Mary Fuller, executive director of community services, said many people are struggling to purchase food, noting that the nonprofit spends about $10,000 a month to supplement donations.

“We have never been more passionate or committed to being the lead resource for food insecurity in Phoenixville,” Fuller said.

Dr. Alan Fegley, superintendent, said the district is incredibly happy to support the nonprofit.

“They are an amazing partner for the district and our families, and I’d be thrilled to see us fill two
buses at this event,” said Fegley, who will be grilling burgers at the event.
