Gable Steps Down as Phoenixville Fire Chief

His resignation is effective December 31.

The Phoenixville Borough Council, regretfully, accepted the resignation of fire chief James Gable at Tuesday night’s meeting. Gable, who will step down on December 31, cited the decline of volunteerism within the department and his lack of drive to continue to lead as the reason’s for his decision. He began his career with the department in April of 1999.

Council vice president Michael Speck praised Gable for his service and competence before reading aloud the letter of resignation he gave the borough. The letter, in full, is below:

I write you to inform I will be retiring from the position of Fire Chief of Phoenixville effective December 31, 2012.

I have had a long journey as a leader of the Department. I started my career in April 1999 as an Assistant Chief moving through the ranks to Chief of Department. As the time commitment required of the Chief position continued to increase, I was able to champion and assist with the hiring of the first paid Fire Chief. Upon Council’s decision to ultimately eliminate this paid position, I again volunteered to be Chief of Department.

Since returning to Chief in 2007, I have continued my effort to keep the department moving in a progressive manner. On-going decline of volunteerism in the fire service as a whole has caused us to realize some major changes must be made. I am glad I was able to be part of a movement to push changes that will hopefully strengthen the department and provide a solid foundation for the future.

Unfortunately, I feel that I cannot add anymore and have lost my drive as a leader. The time has come for me to step aside and allow other members of the Department to take over.

I must say the involvement and support from the current Borough Council has been unprecedented in my time. For this I am grateful.

Thank you for letting me be a leader of the Borough's fire service.
