How Phoenixville's 'Clinic' Treated 60,000 Uninsured Patients

Their model is simple: patients pay what they can.

In the ongoing battle to provide medical care to patients of limited means, Dr. Lorna Stuart has taken a radical tack: she lets them pay what they can.

In a terrific piece in The Daily Local News, Frank Otto explains how Stuart and Rev. Marie Swayze turned the abandoned rectory of St. Peters Episcopal Church into The Clinic; a non-profit medical care provider that does everything from electrocardiograms to eye tests for local people without health insurance. It’s treated over 60,000 people in its decade of existence.

The upshot: there is no set fee for an appointment, patients are just asked to pay what they can.
