Hydrant Flushing In Phoenixville Likely Cause Of Cloudy Tap Water

Some Phoenixville residents noticed their water was discolored this week, but the public works director said it's hydrant flushing.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA — While Phoenixville fire hydrants were flushed this year, some residents noticed discoloration of the water.

Borough of Phoenixville Public Works Director, Brian A. Watson announced on Monday the Borough's semi-annual flushing of fire hydrants in the water system would begin Oct. 5 and continue for five weeks, moving south through the borough.

"The flushing program will begin in that portion of the borough north of French Creek from Fillmore Street south to Bridge Street," Watson said. "We are scheduling the flushing between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in an effort to minimize the inconvenience to users of the system," he explained.

Though an alert was sent out, not all got the message, and some residents wondered why their water appeared to be off-color, some reporting it had a yellow tint.

Watson explained that the flushing of the water distribution system twice a year was an integral part of an overall maintenance program. "Flushing of fire hydrants may cause cloudiness with your tap water and we ask for your patience, as this condition is only temporary," he said.
