Inquirer: Senate Challenger Smith Calls for Flat Tax

Would you support one income tax rate for every earner?

Tom Smith, the Republican challenger to Senator Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA), called for a flat tax on Wednesday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Though Smith didn’t specify which federal income tax rate he supports, he said in a news conference outlining his broader economic plan that a flat tax is more fair than the present code, which he called “ten times the length of the bible without any of the good news.”

The paper added that Smith’s tax plan isn’t entirely flat, as it carves out exemptions for mortgage interest, charitable giving, and student loans. He also said he would consider an exemption for the impoverished.
