Phoenixville Fire Station, Montco Shelter Get State Grant Funds

The new fire station project, an emergency services facility, and a domestic shelter are recipients of redevelopment assistance funds.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA — State funding for projects in Chester and Montgomery counties includes $1.75 million for the new Phoenixville Fire Station, $2 million for an emergency services facility in Upper Providence Township, and $1 million for a domestic shelter.

The Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grants were announced this week.

The Phoenixville Fire Station will receive $1.75 million toward construction and infrastructure expenses as well as for related costs for community health, safety, and education. Projects include adding an office and support space and a six-bay drive-thru apparatus room and improving indoor and outdoor training capabilities.

Pennsylvania Rep. Melissa Shusterman (D-Chester-Montgomery) said this will help the station transition from a volunteer fire company to a professional and volunteer fire company.

Phoenixville Borough's most budget included a tax increase that Borough Manager E. Jean Krack said, "is entirely due to the $15 million bond council voted to take out last month to replace the Civic Center building at 123 Main St. and the current firehouse at 177 Church St."

Krack said both buildings are more than 100 years old and in need of significant repair. The fire station needs space to store equipment. He said discussion of a new facility has been on the table for more than 10 years.

Based on an average home assessment of $108,000 in the borough, the average homeowner in Phoenixville will pay $105 more in taxes in 2021 than they did last year, said Krack earlier this month.

In Upper Providence Township, Central Emergency Services will receive $2 million for the construction of a fire and emergency services facility and training building. This facility will be the headquarters and primary response location for all fire and EMS services for Upper Providence Township, Shusterman reported.

Specifically, the project includes installation and construction of foundations, structural elements, interior construction, and finishes for the new building and associated training building.

Laurel House in Montgomery County will receive $1 million toward building renovations such as creating ADA-friendly spaces, rooms to accommodate residents with special care needs, and installing an elevator.

This funding will also help with the creation of a reception area, conference room, large communal kitchen and dining room, multiple bathrooms, separate client meeting rooms, a children's play area, library, administrative offices, and storage.

Shusterman said, "Now more than ever, Pennsylvanians depend on resources like emergency services and Laurel House for support as we continue our fight against COVID-19."

"Though these three projects are vastly different, each of them uniquely contributes to the safety of our community. I sincerely thank the governor for funding these essential services in my district that benefits everyone, but particularly women, children, and families."

The Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program is administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects.
