Phoenixville Groups Give Ongoing Support For Black Lives Matter
In solidarity with Black Lives Matter, Phoenixville's Diversity In Action group is planning a socially distanced vigil for Thursday night.
PHOENIXVILLE, PA — A series of Thursday vigils both virtual and in-person at Bridge and Main streets in Phoenixville continues this week "in solidarity with Black Lives Matter."
The "We Are" vigil on Dec. 17 from 7-7:30 p.m. in downtown Phoenixville this week is organized by Diversity In Action, whose president Gwynne Hagee said the event "will open in a minute of silent contemplation as we remember our black, brown, and indigenous brothers and sisters who have lost their lives to racial violence."
Hagee said interested participants may join the vigil on the corner of Bridge and Main Streets in Phoenixville at Renaissance Park by the mural site.

"As darkness falls earlier now, we will supply battery operated candles, or you may use your cell phone flashlight as a candle," she said.
Wearing a mask is required and social distancing must be observed, event planners said. Participants are asked to carry or wear signs in support of Black Lives Matter if they are able.

The vigils have been ongoing since July, alternating between virtual and live outdoors, meeting live on first Thursdays and in-person on third Thursdays of each month.
"The intent of these monthly vigils is to sustain a peaceful public presence in solidarity with Black Lives Matter," said Hagee.
In addition to the use of the Phoenixville Borough parking lots, alternative parking will be available for a donation in the First Presbyterian Church lot at 145 Main Street, or at the Phoenixville Senior Center at 153 Church Street. Signs in each lot will explain how to make a donation, Hagee said.
Different community groups have hosted the vigils. Hagee said Rev. Doug Hagler of First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville is the contact person for any group or organization interested in hosting a "We Are" vigil. Connection information for the virtual vigils on Zoom can be requested at doughagler@gmail.com.
There about 30 people at the first in-person gathering at the corner of Bridge and Main streets in Phoenixville on July 16, Hagler reported last summer.
Among groups that have participated are First Presbyterian Church, Bethel Baptist Church, Phoenixville Area Transition Community, Schuylkill Friends Meeting, Black Light Project, Diversity In Action, Social Concerns Committee, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church, according to Hagler.
