Angel Food Ministries Suspends Service

A letter to the editor from Cindy McKinley, site director for Angel Food Ministries at 426 Laurelwood Road in North Coventry Township.

In May of 2007 Calvary Christian Center, located at 426 Laurelwood Road in North Coventry, partnered with Angel Food Ministries. The Center was just one of 5,000 host sites in 45 states that offered Angel Food.

It is our desire to do what we can to bring hope to those in our community and Angel Food was just one of the way we could do just that.

On Friday, September 7, we received the following e-mail from Angel Food Ministries:

“We regret to inform you that Angel Food Ministries (AFM) will not be holding a food distribution for the month of September.

As you know we are in a trying time in our economy and AFM has tried to maintain cost increase when food prices are going up from the vendors, gas prices are increasing daily, and the economy has become so unstable.

Full refunds are now being processed to those who have already placed orders for the September distribution.

Like the thousands of businesses in America that have endured one of the worst recession s in the past 100 years, we too have faced operational and financial challenges. We have every intention to continue offering great food at great prices in the coming months and are considering ways to reorganize or restructure our Ministry.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to the hundreds of thousands of customers who have come to rely on us every month, to our host sites and to the thousands of volunteers who join us in serving God by helping those in need.”

It is with great sadness that we no longer have this avenue in which to help others. In the past four years the Center has helped well over 1,000 families stretch their grocery budget. It didn’t matter where they came from, nor how much money they made, we treated everyone the same, with dignity and respect. Those who entered our doors knew they would be greeted by smiling faces of those who truly cared about their situation. It's all about building lasting relationships.

We could not have done this ministry without all our volunteers who gave of their time, talents, finances and strength, to help others in their time of need.

We all are affected by the condition of our economy, one way or another. Let’s face it, many are one pay check away from being in the same boat as others, without a job or even worse homeless. A long time ago I learned that there is always hope. I love what King David said in Psalm 18:2 ‘The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.’

In the past The Center has helped with food drives, given out school supplies and Christmas trees. We will continue to bring hope during these trying times.
