POTTSTOWN, PA — A local man has been convicted by a jury on charges including aggravated assault on a child, with the panel agreeing with prosecutors that the defendant abused his former girlfriend's 19-month-old son in early 2021 when the child was under his care, according to media reports and court records.

Gerren Lee Foulkes, 34, a Pottstown resident, was found guilty on felony charges of aggravated assault of someone less than 13 years of age, endangering the welfare of children, and a misdemeanor count of simple assault.

The Mercury newspaper reported that the jury believed the account of prosecutors, who had contended that Foulkes physically abused the 19-month-old child when the young boy was in his care in February 2021.

Foulkes is currently in state custody while he awaits sentencing, according to the criminal docket sheet in the case.

Other felony and misdemeanor counts that were initially lodged against the defendant were dismissed prior to trial, according to court records.

The Mercury report says that Foulkes expressed shock at the jury verdict this week, stating, "I can't believe it," and claiming that witnesses lied on the stand during the trial.

The story says that the jury of 10 men and two women convicted Foulkes on the serious charges after deliberating for about two hours.

The conviction carries with it a possible sentence of between 17-and-one-half to 35 years in prison, according to the report.
