POTTSTOWN, PA — Officials estimate the work to reconstruct the historic Pottstown bridge, connecting Montgomery and Chester counties, will take three years, they said during groundbreaking ceremonies held Monday.

The 800-foot long Keim Street Bridge was built in 1935 and connects Pottstown with North Coventry Township on the other side of the Schuylkill River.

"Soon, a brand new bridge will rise in its place to restore this vital connection for residents, businesses, and travelers," county officials said. "The reconstruction is scheduled to be completed in 2028."

Structural deficiencies in the eight span, steel-pony truss forced the bridge to shutter.

The new bridge will feature 11-foot wide driving lanes in both directions, four-foot wide shoulders, and a six-foot wide sidewalk.

The $20 million project is funded with 80 percent federal funds, 15 percent state funds, and 5 percent Montgomery County funds.

Montgomery County commissioners were joined by State Reps. Joe Ciresi and Paul Friel, as well as Pottstown borough council president Dan Weand, at Monday's groundbreaking.
