Phillies: 'Friends And Protectors'

From Pottstown School District Director of Community Relations John J. Armato:

Kindergarten and first grade students at received first hand instruction on fire prevention.  

During an outside assembly conducted by members of the Pottstown Phillies Fire Company, students with the help of the firemen used a three-inch fire hose to spray water and extinguish an imaginary fire.  

Phillies fireman Chad Quinter instructed the students on a number of household safety tips and emergency instructions in case of a fire.  

He also demonstrated many pieces of equipment that a firefighter carries with them into action.  

“The Pottstown Phillies are happy to visit local schools and talk with our students in the hopes of establishing an understanding of fire safety," he said. "Students can learn some basic facts that could some day save lives. It is our goal to have the students look at us as friends and protectors.”  

The students gazed in wonder when the fire truck water canon was used to spray a large stream of water which created a rainbow on the sunny day.

First grade teacher Mary Ellen Lammey expressed the school’s view of the importance of assemblies of this nature.

Having our students learn at an early age the safety lessons is an invaluable lifesaving tool for our community.
